The Technical Operations Behind Bluetooth

The Bluetooth technology is quick, wireless, low-powered, and will connect devices together. Bluetooth needs no site positioning like with infrared.

The prototype circuits are contained on a 0.9 cm square board, and a smaller circuit board is being developed now.

When Bluetooth devices get within a certain range of each other, they will exchange addresses and capability details automatically. They will then establish a 1 MB link with security that they will use. Voice data and plain data can be handled well, and topography isn’t a big deal here.

The technology is made possible by placing a tiny, non-expensive, short-range transceiver into devices. This radio operates on a 2.45 GHz frequency band, and can support as much as 721 KB per second, and has three voice channels.

Every device has its own 48-bit address from the IEEE 802 standard, and its connections are point to point or multipoint. The max range is 10 meters, although it can be extended to 100 meters by increasing the power. Bluetooth employs a method called technique hopping, which means that frequencies are changed, so it won’t be bothered by radio interference.

Bluetooth also won’t drain you device’s battery, which can be a great advantage for everyone. The power consumption is simply limited. Only 0.3mA is used by the technology when in stand-by mode, and this is actually less than 5% of the power consumption of most cell phones.

Security at the bit level is guaranteed by the Bluetooth technology. The authentication is controlled by the user via a 128 bit key. Radio signals can be coded up to 128 bit. Frequency hopping already make the technology hard to listen into.

The baseband protocol involves both circuit and packet switches. You can also reserve slots for synchronous packets. Hop frequencies will differ per packet. Normally, a packet covers a single slot although it can be extended to cover up to five slots.

Bluetooth can also support data channels of up to three simultaneous voice channels. So you can transfer data while you talk on your cell phone. Each channel can support 64 KB.

From a technical standpoint, Bluetooth is very different indeed. It’s the best wireless method in the world, surpassing even infrared. For communication on the go, Bluetooth is indeed very hard to compete with.
